VPS Memory and Swap: How to Tell Whether You Need More RAM

Updated · Autdo Cloud

Look at available memory, process usage and sustained swap activity together. Linux uses otherwise idle RAM for cache, so a low value in the simple free column does not automatically mean the VPS is running out of memory.

Take a short snapshot

free -h
swapon --show
vmstat 1 5
ps aux --sort=-rss | head
sh

The available estimate in free is generally more informative than unused memory alone. In vmstat, repeated swap-in and swap-out activity can indicate pressure, but the first line usually represents averages since boot rather than the latest interval.

Understand swap's role

Swap can absorb an occasional spike or move inactive pages out of RAM. It is slower than memory and can create substantial disk I/O under pressure. A large swap file does not make a permanently oversized workload healthy.

Autdo's current plan definitions do not allocate swap as an extra guaranteed memory resource. Check the actual guest before assuming a swap device exists. Creating one requires available storage and an appropriate operational decision.

Reduce demand first

Limit application workers, database buffers and concurrent build jobs. Bound caches and queues. If the steady working set still exceeds available memory, choose a larger plan or split the workload rather than repeatedly restarting it.

Container statistics may show limits and usage differently from guest-wide tools. Verify both the container's configured limit and the VPS's total allocation when diagnosing an OOM event.
