VPS Backup and Restore: Build a Recoverable Copy, Not Just an Archive

Updated · Autdo Cloud

A useful VPS backup is an independent copy you can restore into a working service. It needs application consistency, protected credentials, retained versions and a tested recovery process—not just a successful file transfer.

Decide what must be recovered

Include application data, uploads, configuration and the information needed to redeploy software. Databases normally need a logical export or a supported physical backup method. Copying live database files without coordination can produce an unusable backup.

Record how secrets and encryption keys are recovered securely. A backup encrypted with a lost key is not recoverable; storing its only key beside a compromised server can undermine protection.

Separate failure domains

Keep at least one important copy outside the VPS and preferably outside its immediate host or storage failure domain. A second directory on the same virtual disk is not an independent backup. RAID and snapshots do not protect against every deletion, compromise or host loss.

Autdo's current listed plans do not include automated backups. Do not interpret the presence of backup-related interface options as confirmation that a particular order includes storage or retention.

Test restoration

Restore a sample into a separate test environment. Verify database integrity, file permissions and that the application starts with the recovered configuration. Measure the time needed to transfer and restore the full dataset, not only a tiny test file.

Check backup exit status, destination capacity and retention regularly. Keep more than one restore point so a newly corrupted version does not replace the only good copy.
