How Much Backup Storage Does a VPS Need?
Updated · Autdo Cloud
Backup storage should be sized for retained restore points, data growth and recovery operations, not just the VPS's current used space. Compression and deduplication can help, but their effectiveness depends on the data.
Begin with a simple estimate
For full independent copies, multiply the data size by the number of versions and add headroom. Five copies of 20 GiB need about 100 GiB before compression, metadata and growth. Incremental tools can use less, but a large database rewrite or encrypted archive can reduce the expected savings.
Exclude reproducible caches when appropriate, but include configuration, encryption keys stored securely, application uploads and a consistent database backup. A directory copy of a running database is not automatically recoverable.
Consider transfer time
A large restore through a rate-limited connection may take much longer than expected. Use the plan's per-instance limit, not the host's physical uplink label, to estimate a lower-bound transfer time. Actual completion also depends on storage and the backup destination.
Retention and deletion
Keep more than one known-good restore point so a damaged or compromised copy does not immediately replace the only backup. Configure pruning deliberately and inspect free space at the destination. Test retention changes before running them against your only archive.
Autdo's current listed plans do not include automated backups. A Storage-series VPS, even when available, is still only one component of a backup design. Keep a copy in a separate failure domain and protect its credentials.
