Can You Host a Public Website on a NAT VPS?

Updated · Autdo Cloud

Yes, but the website needs a reachable public HTTP or HTTPS entry point. A mapped high port can serve a URL containing that port; a normal https://example.com URL requires an ingress path accepting public port 443.

Choose an ingress design

One option is an explicitly numbered URL, if your audience and clients accept it. Another is a separate public reverse proxy that listens on 443 and forwards to the NAT VPS's assigned port. A tunnel-based service may also work, subject to that service's features and terms.

DNS alone does not translate port 443 into your assigned high port. A CDN also does not automatically solve that problem unless its actual configuration provides the required origin routing.

Configure the origin

Run the web application on a known guest port, map the appropriate protocol and allow that destination through the guest firewall. Test the application locally, then from an external network using the assigned public endpoint.

If a reverse proxy terminates HTTPS, consider how the proxy-to-origin connection is protected. Do not expose an unencrypted administrative session or secrets over an untrusted path. Restrict origin access where practical and configure trusted proxy headers carefully.

Assess total cost

Include any extra proxy or tunnel service in your budget. If the application requires many standard public ports or a very simple network setup, a dedicated-IPv4 product elsewhere may fit better than adding layers.

Autdo's listed NAT plans do not imply that a managed website ingress service is included. See reverse proxy design, certificate challenges and Nginx configuration.
